Les Coteaux Schisteux Seguret

Les Coteaux Schisteux is a blend of approximately 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah from a plot called “Les Turques” at the top of the hill of Seguret. Due to the extreme height of the terrassed vineyards on craggy slopes, access is extremely hard without a tractor or four-wheel drive.

The terroir is both limestone and calcareous with the majority having a very large schist content, hence the reason behind the name ‘Les Coteaux Schisteux’. The vines are 40 years old and are mostly bush vines from which the yield was 30 to 35 hl per ha depending on the plot.

RECOGNITION:

Gold Medal Decanter

VARIETAL:

90% Grenache and 10% Syrah

VINIFICATION:

The grapes were picked during the last week of September 2003 and transported to the bottom of the hill to be vinified at the Cave. Natural alcoholic fermentation took place with a long cuvaison (23 days) and the malolatic fermentation took place before the press, which enabled the most to be extracted from the grapes

MATURING:

The wine was so powerful that Paul Boutinot and French winemaker Eric Monnin made the decision to age the wine in new French oak barrels (medium toast) at 100% for 15 months. After ageing in barrels the wine was then kept in tank for 12 months to allow for a final integration of the wood.

COMMENTS:

The result is a very classic Rhône sporting structure and finesse. It has intense notes of vanilla, black cherry fruit and spice on the nose and flavours of rich morello cherry, plum and chocolate on the palate mingled with some vanilla, caramel and cinnamon.

A wonderful match for hearty meat dishes like roast lamb or casseroles, this wine can be enjoyed now or has the potential to be stored for the next 10 to 15 years.
