Chateau Haut-Brion

The venerable Château Haut-Brion's history can be traced back through many centuries, to an era when First Growths along the banks of the Gironde were mere fortresses encompassed by uninhabitable marshland. In 1935 the American financier Clarence Dillon purchased the property for 2,350,000 francs following the tumultuous years of depression which had led to many properties being put up for sale. Allegedly Dillon was also considering Cheval Blanc and Ausone but got lost in the fog and never reached those destinations. Good thing for Chateau Haut-Brion.

“The prodigious 1989 Haut-Brion is one of the greatest first-growths I have ever tasted.” (Robert Parker, 2/97)
